Coconut Oil

Why we use it

Moisturizing and smoothing – for all skin types, especially dry

Antimicrobial – eliminates bacterial and fungal growth

Odor eliminating – no bacteria = no interactions with natural body moisture = no unwanted smells

What is it?

Derived from: the meat, kernels and milk of coconuts (Cocos nucifera).

Composition: loaded with fatty acids, primarily lauric acid.

Type: we use virgin coconut oil; more natural, no chemical refining, bleaching or deodorizing. Processing does not alter the oil and does not contain unwanted solvents to extract oil, such as hexane.

Antimicrobial action: the breakdown of lauric acid produces monolaurin (monoglyceride) which helps disintegrate bacterial membranes.

Example: in a randomized controlled study, coconut oil was found to clear 95% of staphyoloccal (bacterial strain) colonization in patients with atopic dermatitis.

Arrowroot Powder

Why we use it

Thickener – cuts the oily/greasy texture, creating a soothing balmy feeling

Moisture absorbing – oils, sebum, and sweat are eliminated

Drying effect – wicks away natural undesired body wetness

What is it?

Derived from:  extracted and dried from the root of  the large perennial herb, arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea)

Also known as: arrowroot starch

Shea Butter

Why we use it

Soothing –  absorbs into the skin, leaving you oil free and fresh

Conditioning – superior skin hydrator  to balance out the powders

Antioxidant – high vitamin A and E content promote antioxidant activity

What is it?

Derived from: the kernels of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa).

Composition: triglycerides and fatty acids, including oleic, stearic, linoleic and palmitic acid.

Bicarbonate of Soda

Why we use it

Combats odor – promotes an underarm environment that is uninhabitable to bacteria responsible for causing odor

Absorbs wetness – it is a hygroscopic molecule, meaning it readily attracts and absorbs moisture

What is it?

Also known as: sodium bicarbonate, baking soda or bicarb

Derived from: occurs naturally in mineral deposits

Alkalinity effects: it increases the pH of our armpits, creating an environment unfavourable for bacterial growth. That being said, some people’s skin is more sensitive to bicarbonate soda, so Clathryn has created its formula to have the lowest bicarb concentration while still being an effective ingredient

Kaolin Clay

Why we use it

Absorbent – helps absorb unwanted body wetness

Exfoliator – removes dry, retired skin

Binder & stabilizer – important for contributing to the silky-smooth texture

What is it?

Composition: powdery silicate found in mineral clay deposits, primary component in kaloninite mineral

Derived from: naturally a result from erosion and weathering of rocks

Also known as: ‘China clay’, because of its importance in the manufacture of china and porcelain. Named after the hill in China, Kao-ling, where it was mined for centuries.

Type: we use white kaolin clay as it is most moisturizing and rejuvenating. Additionally, it’s known for its superior brightness and whiteness, leaving your clothes unstained.

Essential Oils

Why we use it

Pleasant smell – refreshing, herbal and therapeutic

Antimicrobial – help keep bacteria at bay and eliminate their presence

De-odorizing no bacteria = no interactions with natural body moisture = no unwanted smells

What is it?

Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia): core antimicrobial (bacterial, fungal) and anti-inflammatory base

Lemon (Citrus limonum): zesty, refreshing

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): calming, soothing

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia): spicy citrus, sophisicated

Vitamin E

Why we use it

Anti-oxidant – helps keep your underarm skin youthful and smooth

Stability – important for the longevity of our product, natural preservative

What is it?

Derived from: naturally extracted from plant and seed oils

Composition: fat-soluble antioxidant

Type: vitamin E is a broad umbrella name for a number of different molecules, with related structures. We use a tocopherol blend.

Anti-oxidant effect: helps control and eliminate reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS’s are harmful to the body and contribute to the aging process. ROS’s can alter the biosynthesis of collagen, an important component of healthy skin.

Preservative-like effect: while technically not a preservative, vitamin E is a natural stabilizer that slows the oxidation (adverse reaction with air) of sensitive ingredients.

Cetyl Alcohol

Why we use it

Thickener – emulsifies and helps our dry and oil ingredients to mix

Conditioning – soothing to skin

Moisture absorbing – Water-binding properties make it a desirable ingredient to help prevent drying of the skin.

What is it?

Derived from: plant and vegetable oils, originally produced from sperm whale oil, but no longer as this is an unsustainable source and the whales are endangered.

Composition: natural fatty alcohol, long chain organic alcohol, the “good” alcohols.

Note: this is not to be confused with “alcohol” in the ethyl family (“bad”), that is known to be drying and damaging to the skin. Cetyl alcohol is quite the opposite as it protects and keeps moisture in the skin.

Type: there are many variations, we use 1-Hexadeconal C16H34O

Beware: of “bad” alcohol/ethanol in your skincare products listed in the ingredients list as: Alcohol Denat., SD Alcohol 3-A/30/39/40 or just plain alcohol.
